Clay Cats

We have a lot of cats at our school, and decided to add to the cat pack and create our own clay cats. First we researched cat pictures and used them as reference photos to create a cat plan in our sketchbooks. Using a slab roller, or just a rolling pin we rolled out the clay and wrapped it around a cardboard tube that has been wrapped in plastic wrap so it wouldn’t stick to the clay.

After pulling it off the tube, the clay was then sliced into a v-shape at the top, to better create the ears. Then the nose, whiskers, tail and other parts were attached. After a bisque fire, the cats were then painted with acrylic paints (we ran out of glaze)! We practiced painting cat eyes, and students were also introduced to sponge painting, using small clay sponges. We used a coat of mod podge at the end, to make the cats shine!
