Islamic Design Dishes

These dishes are a great intro to scoring float glass and using glassline paint. Students first research an Islamic style design of their choice. Glass pieces are scored to the size of 4″ x 4″ so the design may need to be resized on the copier. Once a design is chosen, students trace it using tracing paper, and transfer it to their sketchbook. Here they can plan the colors they would like to use, and color in their design with colored pencils.

Once they have a plan in place, they can score a piece of float glass to the correct dimensions. The glass is washed and dried, then with the design underneath the glass, it is traced onto the glass using a black permanent marker. This marker burn off in the kiln, so will not appear on the final design. Glassline paint is then used to paint the design onto the glass. Once complete, students take a “before” photo to keep in their sketchbook.

Once their glass comes out of the kiln, they take an “after” photo and place beside their before photo in their sketchbook. These process photos help in future glasswork in the class, as students can troubleshoot and notice effects that certain glass materials have once fired.
