Mexican Inspired Sun

We looked at images of the sun from Mexico and studied Mexican folk art motifs. Students then created a plan with either a sun, or a sun and moon, deciding which parts would be raised or added on, and which areas would show some texture. Lastly, students planned their color scheme and some decorative designs inspired by the Mexican folk art motifs we viewed as a class. Students then rolled out clay using a rolling pin, and traced a paper plate (for size). Using clay tools to add texture, and remembering to score, add slip and blend added clay for areas that were raised. Once the suns were dried and fired, students used acrylic paints and a clear gloss to finish their designs.
